A graduate of Sewickley Academy (PA) and St. Lawrence University (N.Y.), Usaj started coaching at the collegiate level at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2006. He spent two seasons as head coach. During the summer of 2007, Usaj coached Team California USA (U-19 Team) in Tokyo, Japan, in the International Friendly Games and led the team to a second-place finish. After his experience at USC, Usaj spent two seasons as the assistant coach at Davenport University (MI), a member of the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA), taking them to 2 Final Four appearances.
After graduating from St. Lawrence University in 2002 with a degree in performance and communication arts, Usaj was the offensive coach at Chagrin Falls High School (OH) and helped the program win a state championship (2003) in just its fourth season of existence. Usaj also served as the head coach at Harvard-Westlake High School (CA) from 2004-2006, where the team won the southern section title.
More recently, Coach Usaj, served as Head Coach of Washington & Jefferson College (NCAA Div. 3) where he lead his team to the inaugural PAC Championship in 2015. Returning to the Prep High School coaching realm in 2016, Coach Usaj took over the Shady Side Academy (Pittsburgh, PA.) lacrosse team. During his two years at SSA, Coach Usaj coached his teams to back to back quarter final state appearances, along with two 3rd place WPIAL wins.
Throughout his high school coaching career, over 50 players coached by Usaj have gone on to play competitive college lacrosse. Most recent graduates are playing at the University of Richmond (DI), High Point University(DI), Robert Morris University(DI), University of Utah(DI), Ohio Wesleyan(DIII), R.I.T. (DIII),, and Amherst College. (DIII),
NEOLAX – “I’m very excited to continue to grow our program here on the eastside of Cleveland. I want to help create a fun atmosphere with a focus on skill development and growth. Our goal with NEOLAX is to give an opportunity to any interested local area youth athlete who have an interest in the fastest growing sport in America, Lacrosse. With Coach Jim Scully’s and my combined experience, NEOLAX players will be able to learn from coaches that have successfully coached at the NCAA, MCLA, High School and youth levels. We are excited to start this program and look forward to sharing our passion and love for the great game of lacrosse, to your child."
